The Lemonade Stand was a reaction to the downfall of the contemporary art fair Art Chicago in 2006. The fair was half-built but the organizers ran out of funds with the tents already fully assembled and the floors halfway laid. Using this empty but prepared site, I staged a free Lemonade Stand and handed out glasses of lemonade to passers by for the run of the fair.
A number of memorable encounters happened as people walked by. Joggers from the lakeshore, curious onlookers, the tent rental company's workers, Chicago Park District employees and an entire fourth grade class enjoyed a cold cup. Several visitors even thought that I represented the now displaced fair, asking for directions and looking disgustedly at my pathetic gingham tablecloth, cooler and folding table. .
